Kinja'd!!!3 Kinja'd!!! 21

This weekend I chopped up a HUGE tree that fell into my yard and smashed up ma fence. My last cut was a really big horizontal laying piece. There was no good way for me to both safely position the ladder and stay out of the way of the falling branch. So I decided that I would go for 100% safety on the ladder and get 75% out of the way of the falling branch....

Kinja'd!!!

I had all of my gear on, I was very ready for that branch to hit the ladder. It did, and I hopped off the ladder and softly jump shot the chainsaw into a pile of leaves. Still kinda scary. There is still some tree sticking up, but it’s in my neighbors yard and I was lucky enough. I’m all set on the rest of it.

After that it was back to the Depot to get 5 fence rails and some new wire fence, and we’re back! Plus a bunch of firewood and we were forced into clearing all of the brush that backs up to the fence in that particular part of our yard.

I’m continuing to improve and am learning a lot about paint. In particular I learned that my can of red testors spray was all kinds of fucked up. I tried soaking the tip in thinner... no dice. I also learned that the $35 can of BMW Jade green that I bought is fucking amazing to use!!! I started experimenting with clear coat for some decent results. The Tamiya paints are my favorite thus far.

I have been noticing that the better my setup is for modeling, the nicer work I am doing. Beyond the die casts, I like to freshen up things and stuff that needs fresh paint. For instance there is this weird garden yoga frog that was in the “lets get rid of it” box until my daughter found and fell in love with it. It was weathered, so I freshened it up with some more cartoony colors.

I got really anxious last night as people do on Sundays (even during quarantine if you’re me). So I went down to the workshop, turned on the creative juices via medical marijuana then decided to ORGANIZE. I got this idea for a tray for all of my paints, grabbed a piece of scrap wood that looked about the right size and got to measuring (I needed my wife’s help here because I’m stupid) . Then I broke out my drill press and “Forstner” bits. Two tools I almost never use! It came out really nice! So much fuckin sawdust. I think I’m going to continue to build on it and make compartments for cars/parts/brushes/rattle cans...

It was too late and I was too bent to start putting the 3D printer together, so I just laid out all of the parts and took inventory 4 times because I kept forgetting which pieces I had “checked off”.

Pics. Happy Monday!

I know that feeling of “well,  this may go poorly, but there’s not really another option.” all too well. I hate it.

My wife and I talked it out for an hour or so, moved the ladder everywhere... made it as safe as we could, cleared the area, had 911 on speed dial, haha. I was as careful as I could possibly be for someone who does not know what hes doing. My main thing was get rid of the chainsaw first as I had a good spot in which to fall.

Funny you should ask as I just started shopping them again after I posted this. The one I had locked for $10 was really beat and without the top. I think it would be super helpful to have the top as I’d only have to fabricate the front of that glorious oval.

Anyway the rest were all $25 plus shipping which isn’t out of the question, I’m just trying to find me a dizzeal considering it’s fate.

One of the points in the chainsaw safety lists is never chainsaw on a ladder. OTOH, I’ve done that because sometimes there’s no other way. Other calling in the pros.

I deal with underlying anxiety and I can’t get anything done because of it . Does the medical pot help? Have you tried CBD for it ? Prescription meds?

Funny you should say that because as I stood on the ladder with the chain saw discussing the scenario with my wife I said “ya know this whole thing with even standing on a ladder with a chainsaw seems dumb”

But yes, short of climbing the tree and sitting on the branch I was to cut, there was no other way.

So I did therapy and pharmaceutical meds for the past two years while going completely sober otherwise. Therapy helped a lot at first but became repetitive and I didn’t like the idea of taking a benzo everyday (although it does really help) super habit forming and they kinda make ya dumb. More recently I have been doing better with just exercise and obviously I’m back on the weed. So I have completely cut out Klonopin (the benzo I was prescribed) and I’m working on cutting out the daily I take (pristiq) although it has helped a alot.

The weed is great except...CBD only does nothing for me. The medical helps but you have to use enough to keep a decent tolerance so you don’t go to outer space every time. Beyond that it’s expensive here in PA, and you’re kind of stuck ya know you can’t drive anywhere for a while and all that. Luckily for me my wife does not have an issue with it as long as I keep it away from our little one. So she drives I fly most of the time.

Glad you weren’t hurt cutting the branch, I’ve seen enough close calls to make me extremely careful when cutting on a ladder.

One way to make cutting on a ladder safer is to tie the ladder and if possible yourself into the tree, so if a branch does hit it you won’t fall. Or you could j ust call the pros :)

I assume the never chainsaw on a ladder is because if anything goes a bit awry, you can’t manuever. Then you fall 6 ft while holding a running chainsaw. But you seemed to have minimized the risks as much as possible.

ah, just curious if weed was a magical solution. I was on Klonopin and worried about the long term memory issues. Klonopin also had some tolerance but it sounds like weed is the same. I have Klonopin on an as needed basis so it sounds like it’s easier and cheaper to do that instead of weed.

I’ve done every single prescription med and they all had some kinda side effect.  I’ve got a couple of CBD tabs from a friend but I haven’t tried them yet.  Thanks for your input.

Glad you weren’t seriously injured, coupla tips, tie the ladder to the tree, & tie the chainsaw to a short length of rope so you can drop it any time. Clip/tie the other end to the ladder, not yourself.
Great tray. Also, you can buy spray can tips in several different spray patterns, it’s cheaper to try another tip than to toss a can with good paint still inside.
Good luck with that printer, I’m on the fence about finally buying one. Since I’d have to learn 3D modeling software anyway, it might be cheaper for me to send my files to a vendor, like shapeways.

Good tips! Next time I might leave a cut down like that to the pros. It was a shitty area all around brush/down trees everywhere. Even a couple of bonus random rail road ties with rebar sticking straight up! I located and removed those first. What I really should have done was break that last cut up into 3 or 4 cuts moving the ladder just slightly each time. Anyway hindsight and all.

I’m just getting started with the printer. Manged to burn two holes in the print bed so far...

But I’ve seen it done the wrong way and I’ve seen it done the right way. It’s the small things that make big differences. And less stit ches.

Impressive paint work!

The problem for me and making customs, is that I genuinely hate painting things. I like the rest of it, but the painting keeps me away.

Thanks! I used to hate spray painting I’d always go too heavy , then I watched someone with proper technique and now I  love painting...except the details. Head/tail lights. I haven’t tried masking yet though.
